Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that Mesolithic flints, a Roman coin and a medieval trading token had been found in the surrounding area, and that several hundred undated struck flints had been recorded at a site to the north. To the north-east lay a Scheduled Ancient Monument comprised of a sub-rectangular enclosure overlain by a moated homestead. Modern barns and some which dated back to the 16th century were present at the site itself; a number were to be retained as part of the development. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential. A watching brief during removal of concrete ground slabs, followed by trial trenching of any areas identified as being of interest, was recommended. [AIP] |
