Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a quarry identified that a possible ring ditch of uncertain date would be directly affected by the proposal, and that a charcoal-filled pit of uncertain date had been observed during the construction of a pipeline across the site in 1977. During the same pipeline construction, the site of an iron-smelting furnace and associated iron slag deposits had been found to the north-west. It was concluded that the pit and the furnace may have been associated, and that they may together have represented a centre of Roman iron production. [Au(adp)] |
