Abstract: |
<summary>A sewage pipe trench serving a property situated within the Scheduled area of an Iron Age hillfort at Stow-on-the-Wold (Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No 159) was archaeologically excavated as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent. Two large parallel ditches located on the crest of a hill slope were revealed. Animal bone retrieved from the inner ditch during a watching brief undertaken immediately before the excavation gave two closely comparable radiocarbon dates spanning the middle Bronze Age; the same context yielded a single sherd of pottery dated to the middle-late Bronze Age transition. The inner ditch was interpreted as a defensive earthwork of a hilltop enclosure of the Rams Hill type. The date of the outer ditch was not determined although circumstantial evidence suggested that the ditch represented the outer defensive circuit of an Iron Age hillfort. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} GLOS239, 11905 |
