Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out along a small section of the Brunton and Shields Waggonway (later known as the Seaton Burn Waggonway). Two trenches were excavated, with the objective of recovering evidence of the Waggonway which opened in stages from 1826 to 1827. The project involved the participation of the wider community, with school children taking part in the excavations. Two phases of the waggonway were identified, the earliest belonged to the Brunton and Shields Railway. Although the track or sleepers had been removed the layout of the track could be discerned. The second phase of the waggonway may have dated from c.1867 when the line was believed to have converted to standard gauge. [Au(adp)] |
