Abstract: |
The site was not located within an Area of Archaeological Significance and did not contain any SAM's, however, it was adjacent to an Area of Archaeological Significance; Hailey Hall School. Despite some evidence of prehistoric through to post-medieval activity in the vicinity, most of the area did not fully begin to develop until the late 19th /early 20th century. However, the actual site was undeveloped until the construction of the MAFF site in the mid-late 20th century. Gravel extraction was known to have occurred in the area related to the brickwork's to the east of the site and on this basis AOC recommended that an archaeological watching brief be carried out on geotechnical investigations. Determining whether gravel extraction had occurred on the site would be an important factor as it would have removed all archaeological deposits in its wake. Only after this should further consideration be given to the archaeological potential for the site and any requirement for further investigation. [Au(abr)] |
