Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as part of a condition on planning permission for the construction of 49 residential dwellings. The main consideration in recommending a suitable course of action was that the archaeological evidence indicated prehistoric use of the area, including a known findspot within the proposed development area. The cartographic and documentary evidence suggested that the site had only a short history of intense land use in more recent times with the construction of dwellings during the 1920s. Prior to residential development, the area consisted of rough grassland and heathland. Terracing of front gardens since this time may have disturbed, and even resulted in the removal of some relevant layers in the southern portion of the site. However, there was no evidence to suggest that the development had led to the truncation of archaeologically relevant layers in the northern portion of the site, as cartographic evidence indicated little change in this area over time. The high proportion of prehistoric sites in the vicinity of the site indicated a reasonable potential for sites of prehistoric (Bronze Age) date. The close proximity of a Bronze Age barrow, coupled with the site's location on the crest of a hill emphasised this potential. The findspot of a Palaeolithic hand axe from the site was intriguing. It was not known if this object was transported to the site from elsewhere or whether it lay close to where it was originally discarded. It was most unlikely that this find represented an open area occupation site and the chances were that it was a stray find. The report confirmed that the impact of this development proposal on any belowground archaeological deposits should be further examined by means of a field evaluation. [Au(adp)]
