Abstract: |
The evaluation confirmed that the immediate area was probably unoccupied before 17th century but during the 18th century buildings were identified as being constructed along the frontage. In the late 18th and 19th centuries plots were laid out and infilled behind the frontage with sheds, workshops and yards. These served artisans who took their lead from the burgeoning steel industry in Sheffield. By 1850 many specific trades are attested and the excavations recovered evidence of bone working and metal working, related to specific buildings on two plots. By the end of that century, the layout was identified as becoming denuded and was swept away during the 20th century. [Au(abr)] |
