Abstract: |
A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a replacement watermain through the village of East Markham identified a number of isolated anomalies filled with mixed soil and available hardcore and interpreted in some cases as localised heavily used property entrances or wet ground near springs. The gravel road metalling revealed in most parts of the village indiciated that the present street pattern was much the same as in the late post-medieval period. Brick rubble found at a number of locations was shown to not be derived from demolition rubble but probably obtained as damaged unused bricks from nearby brickyards. [Au(adp)] |
