Abstract:
Archaeological desktop assessment, rapid field survey and geophysical prospection were undertaken at the site of a proposed housing development covering approximately 21ha at Norgrove to the west of Redditch. The work formed the initial stage of a programme of works required in advance of a full planning application. The aim was to identify areas of potential archaeological significance within the development area and provide recommendations for a second stage of works targeted at any such areas identified. A number of areas of potential were identified for further recording and/or evaluation trenching. Two areas of earthworks relating to water management were identified in the form of a series of ponds, leats and dams. These features are undated at present. However, some are potentially medieval (HWCM 21767), associated with the nearby Abbey at Bordesley. The rest (HWCM 21774 and 21775) are potentially post-medieval and probably relate to the post-medieval agricultural exploitation of the area. Although geophysical survey failed to indicate the presence of any buried features, such as structures, associated with these, the results were inconclusive. A number of field banks, ditches, lynchets and areas of ridge and furrow were also recorded.[AIP]
