Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, at a farm which lay within the precinct of medieval Wallingford Castle. The castle itself was a Scheduled Ancient Monument; the boundary of the Scheduled area crossed the farmyard complex. During the evaluation, archaeological deposits were located which could have formed the fill of a ditch, pit or robber trench, or could have represented a mound, bank or rampart. 13th-14th century pottery and early post-medieval pottery were recovered. It was concluded that, although the documented construction of the outer bailey had occurred in the 13th century, the layers observed appeared to date from the 15th-16th century. [AIP] |
