Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of land proposed for an extension and car parking provision in an area adjcaent to, and to the rear of Cleeve Hall (a Grade II Listed Building), identified that the proposal area lay within an area of strong archaeological interest. Archaeological sites dating to the Romano-British period lay in close proximity and possibly extended into the proposal area, and Cleeve Hall lay on the western periphary of the Saxon and medieval village core. In particular the proposed extension to the rear of the present property would possibly reveal structural remains relating to the medieval episcopal palace and manorial complex from which Cleeve Hall evolved. It was not possible to show whether the lawned area proposed for parking spaces included made-up ground or whether a recognisable but low drop between the lawn and the house reflected limited terracing of the house into its setting.
