Abstract:
The area of the proposed new golf course at Brocket Hall was systematically walked over to identify the nature and location of any archaeological or historic landscape features and to assess the potential of areas to preserve buried archaeological remains. No new archaeological features or sites were identified. The major impacts on the landscape had been the 18th and 19th century development of the Borcket Hall estate and post-war woodland management. However, the remnants of ancient woodland, possibly representing pre-enclosure woodland pasture, were recorded and an area of earthworks to the north of the current driving range may have represented the site of early formal or kitchen gardens. During the survey modern land use was noted. This indicated high levels of ground disturbance in areas of conifer plantations and quarrying suggesting low potential for the survival of buried archaeological remains. Areas of more open mixed woodland, and improved grassland had moderate to good potential. [Au(adp)]
