Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation and subsequent monitoring at the White Hart Inn revealed finds evidence from the Roman, Saxon, medieval and later periods. There was strong evidence for settlement during medieval times, with the majority of the archaeological features and finds belonging to this period. The site lay outside the presumed edge of the Saxon burgh with its bank and ditch and also the abbey precinct that must have dominated the village on the other side of the road. Occasional Roman tile and a single sherd of pottery of this date pointed to the importance of Blythburgh as a river crossing in previous times. [Au(abr)] |
