Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that a medieval farm complex lay in the immediate vicinity. Abbey Barn, which dated from c. AD 1420 and was both a Grade I Listed Building and a SAM, lay adjacent to the site. Abbey Farmhouse was also Grade I Listed, and was contemporary with the barn; the south portion of the boundary wall to the farmhouse was Grade II Listed. In the surrounding area, a Romano-British settlement and cemetery, a Roman road, a medieval church and churchyard and a 1940s airfield had been recorded. Medieval crossheads recovered from the churchyard were held inside the church. No evidence of further substantial medieval buildings within the development area had been found, but the possibility remained that subsidiary or wooden structures may have existed. These or other potential archaeological remains were likely to have been destroyed by more recent landuse in the northernmost part of the proposal site, but may have survived in the remaining areas.
