Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development and an ecological pond identified that a number of sites of archaeoogical interest had been recorded in the surrounding area. Artefacts found included Mesolithic flints, Iron Age pottery and tools, Roman pottery and 13th-14th century pottery. Monuments and other sites included Bronze Age barrows, sections of a Roman road, a possible Roman occupation site, the remains of a medieval moated homestead and a post-medieval building. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site had formed part of agricultural land to the north of Godstone village, and that it had remained undeveloped until the late 19th century. The majority of the site had been developed to a degree which would have destroyed or greatly compromised any existing archaeological evidence. However, a small area in the north-east corner appeared to have escaped previous development. It was recommended that an evaluation of this area should be carried out. [AIP] |
