Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a 1780m of linear trench, was undertaken in response to a planning application. The evaluation indicated that the majority of the site had been used for agricultural use with some evidence for mineral extraction. Major ditches encountered could be matched to field boundaries indicated on the tithe map of 1837. A trackway of presumed medieval date acted as either a 'ride' through the woods that occupied the north and east of the site or access to the common or both. A cluster of small features towards the west of the site near Red Hill Road produced Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery and pointed to a later prehistoric presence in this area. [Au(adp)] |
