Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of five trial trenches, was undertaken in response to a planning condition. Each of the trial trenches showed a fairly similar soil profileA fairly large pit was visible beneath this layer at the north end of trench 4. This feature was elliptical in plan with fairly steeply sloping sides onto a flat, narrow base. It was filled with a mid, slightly reddish brown silty clay, which produced an abraded sherd of prehistoric pottery and one piece of burnt flint. The original function of this feature was elusive. A further trench, no. 5, was located in the vicinity to provide a more intensive sample of this area. This and all other trenches proved to be negative. The only unstratified find was a small waste flake from the subsoil in trial trench 3. [Au(adp)] |
