Abstract: |
Two monitoring visits were made during the excavation of footing trenches. Four probable pits were identified cutting into natural. Due to the depth of footing these pits could not be properly excavated but were recorded from the baulk as clearly as possible. The report concluded that it was interesting to note the depth of dark soil within this trench. This suggested an accumulation of material associated with long term occupation coupled with insignificant soil erosion. The identification of four pits, all of which could have been medieval, suggested the presence of occupation close by. Both Garland Street and Wells Street conformed to the Norman town plan and may have dated from this time. The pits may have related to properties on either of these streets although Garland Street was more likely as it was the closest to the site. [Au(adp)] |
