Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment established that various surveys undertaken during the 19th century identified the fields containing the site as Cinders, Paddock, Park Field and Tynnings. These names suggested that the area probably represented an ancient enclosure. No archaeological work had taken place within the immediate vicinity of the site; however, archaeological excavations 500 metres to the north of the study area had revealed buildings abandoned in the 14th century, interpreted as part of the medieval shrunken village of Charlton.
