Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The site lay immediately north and adjacent to the main Roman Road out of the City of London, in an area where there had been finds of Roman burials and other artefacts outside the City walls. Large numbers of Black Death victims had also been found in the area. The evaluation found evidence of the ancient, presumably prehistoric, environment but no evidence of any human activity predating the post-medieval period, though some residual medieval pottery was found in later gravel extraction contexts.
