Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a spine road and the excavation of a pipeline at a development site. A moat and manorial buildings, known in the 19th century at least as Horton Place, were located on the western side of the development area. Archaeological observations were limited due to the construction technique used for the pipeline, and due to adverse weather conditions. A narrow hollow was observed which had been marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871 as a relatively narrow stream forming the southern boundary of Horton Place. The fill of the hollow appeared to have been relatively recent, and there was no sign that the feature had ever cut any deeper into natural clay. The observations were considered to have been far from conclusive, but to have tallied with the results of trial trenches excavated earlier, which had yielded largely negative evidence. [AIP] |
