Abstract: |
The site was within an area of great archaeological interest, as it was within 200m of the site of the Roman fort and supply base at South Shields. Excavations in and around the fort over the last 125 years had given archaeologists a detailed picture of the chronological development of settlement on the Lawe Top. The site was within the area in which high concentrations of chance finds of Romano-British artefacts had been recovered, and formal archaeological excavation in the vicinity of the site at Hadrian School had encountered structural evidence of Roman buildings. The site occupied an area where Roman features may have been expected to be present unless they have been truncated by later activity. The site was on the northern boundary of Docken Field, which may have represented a field enclosed in 1489. The line of Green's place appeared to have first been set out during the 18th century, and it was probably about this time that the buildings shown on maps of the early 19th century were first built. Until at least the 1840s, the site was occupied by a ropery. This appeared to have been demolished at the time of the construction of the ballast waggonway from Salmon's Quay, which ran into a tunnel immediately west of the site. During the late-19th century, this industrial landscape was replaced by housing, lain out in familiar grid-iron pattern, although the line of Green's Lane appeared to have been preserved. Any archaeological features were likely to have been disturbed by the later industrial and residential developments. However, the extent of this disturbance was not fully understood. Therefore, it was the recommendation of this report that further archaeological evaluation of the site take place to assess the character, extent and survival of deposits or archaeological interest.
