Abstract: |
Activity was known to have taken place in the Wemblon District during the Roman period - if not earlier - but the earliest definite archaeological site close to the study area was a Saxon cemetery just over the crest of Wembdon Hill. The road along the crest of of Wembdon Hill may have followed an ancient ridge-way route. Cokerhurst Farm, surrounded on three sides by the area under investigation, was a late medieval building, but the Cokers estate itself had earlier origins, and the farm site may have dated from further back in the medieval period. However there was no physical evidence for medieval agriculture in the form of lynchets, ridge and furrow, or substantial hedge banks. Six fish ponds were known to have existed, but of these only two appeared to have survived. The westernmost of these was associated with a barn and barton, of which there may have been some remains.
