Abstract: |
A programme of fieldwalking was undertaken on land comprising the proposed extension to Cloford Quarry. The largest artefact category recovered comprised worked stone (both flint and chert) which ranged in date from the Mesolithic to Bronze Age periods. While the assemblage was dominated by scrapers and fabricators of a probable Neolithic/Bronze Age date, the earlier material demonstrated evidence for re-working during these periods. Two principal concentrations of prehistoric flint were identified. Evidence for subsequent activity from the Roman period onwards was present, but the overall quantities were insufficiently large to have been interpreted as anything other than generalised background scatters which may have arisen from manuring or other agricultural activity.
