Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it had been maintained as undeveloped meadowland within the former precinct of Guildford Friary, and subsequently as part of the grounds surrounding Friary Mansion until the 19th century. The proposal area was not close to the known sites of buildings within the friary precinct, and was considered unlikely to have lain in the vicinity of other structures, in view of the fact which it had occupied meadow land, which would presumably have been subject to regular flooding. Finds and sites recorded in the surrounding area included Mesolithic flints, Saxon cemeteries, medieval artefacts, and rubbish pits containing medieval and 17th century pottery. It was concluded that the site could generally be regarded as of low archaeological potential, and that previous development would have further reduced this potential. No further work in connection with the proposed development was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
