Abstract: |
The excavation revealed extensive middle Saxon and post-medieval archaeological remains. The earliest features were six graves, orientated roughly east west suggesting they were Christian. A fine composite 7th century disc brooch, three glass beads and some thin silver rings accompanied one of the burials, whilst another was accompanied by a small iron knife. The 18th-19th century basements of the present buildings had truncated most of the site, in these areas, only large pits and two graves (along with post-medieval rubbish pits, wells, soakaways and culverts) survived. Most of the Saxon pits contained large quantities of waste animal bone, pottery fragments and also clay loom weight fragments, worked-bone and weaving tools. In the southern part of the site, a dog skeleton was identified and heavy pitting was noted, with rough dumping in and around the pits. Although structural remains were not apparent, a possible building was recorded in the south west corner of the site. [Au(abr)] |
