Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The report concluded that there were two components with which to assess the archaeological potential of the area, qualified by recent use of the site. Of most significance was that the site lay within the historic core of the village, which was reflected by the fact that the eastern section lay within an area of archaeological potential on the Borough Lock Plan constraints map. Of less specific significance, was that the site lay both on a geological outcrop rich in finds of earlier prehistoric (Mesolithic) date and in a topographic setting (a river terrace edge) favoured for prehistoric occupation. Both observations would normally merit the recovery of further information, by means of a field evaluation, to confirm this potential and to provide detailed information about the nature, state of preservation etc. of any deposits. However, in this instance, the potential of the site had to be qualified as a result of the previous use, which included structures with basements and possibly the terracing of the late 19th century building into the slope. The basements, certainly, and the terracing, possibly, would have damaged or destroyed any archaeological deposits in these areas. A consideration of the plan for the proposed basement car park showed that it was more extensive than the previous basement occupying Bramley Grange, as it extended close to the eastern boundary with Horsham Road. Field observations made during the site visit suggested that the latter zone comprised made ground, which may have led to better preservation of archaeologically relevant levels than elsewhere on the site. It was recommended, therefore, that those parts of the site affected by redevelopment should be subject to a field evaluation.[Au(adp)] |
