Abstract: |
A survey of archaeological evidence from Museum Gardens was undertaken to define the relative sensitivity of particular areas of the gardens to major horticultural work. Museum Gardens is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is included in the English Heritage Register of Historic Gardens at Grade 2. The survey divided the Gardens into three zones. Zone A was an area over a 19th century swimming pool, where archaeological deposits were unlikely to be affected. Zone B was an area where remains were suspected to exist but had not been proven archaeologically, whilst the stuctural remains of St Mary's Abbey, the Roman legionary fortress and other Roman structural remains were known to lie in Zone C.
