Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation, desk-based assessment and trial trenching was undertaken. The desk-based assessment indicated that the site had been open ground until the late 19th century, at which time a number of buildings were constructed. Later in the 20th century the buildings were demolished with the exception of the buildings fronting Stafford Street. Three trial trenches were excavated and two post-medieval walls were identified in trench one, both were of brick and limestone constructions. A linear pebble surface appearing to date from the early 19th century was also identified in trench one and followed into trench two. Trenches two and three identified walls and structures dating to the 20th century and a possible pond which was visible on the 1841 Tithe Map. [Au(adp)]
