Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at the site of an Iron Age enclosure complex, proposed for development. Evaluations carried out in 1985, as a result of a previous development threat, had recorded Early to Middle Iron Age enclosure ditches and features, a Late Iron Age to early Roman enclosure ditch and several irregular enclosures. During the 1995 excavations, five enclosures were identified. A large, steep-sided pit, cut by one of the enclosure ditches, contained the skeleton of a baby and a fragment of a metal knife with a bone handle. Pottery dating from the Middle Iron Age to the late 1st century AD was recovered. Several phases and sub-phases of activity were identified, and it was found that the site had been abandoned at a date slightly later than that suggested by previous work. Lack of structural evidence within the complex suggested that the main focus of any occupation area had lain elsewhere. [AIP] |
