Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of a housing development. Remains of glass making waste confirmed the presence of glass production, although no buildings associated with this were located. Two roperys were recorded, Ropery 1 was known to have existed in the second quarter of the 18th century, Ropery 2 was known to have been in existence from the first quarter of the 19th century. There was evidence of Victorian and later alterations to these buildings for the construction of a ferro-concrete rope shed. Additionally a WWII air raid shelter was located towards the south-eastern end of the site. The shelter was a standard Covered Trench Shelter and was recorded by scale drawing and photographic record. A further watching brief was recommended during any development work. [Au(adp)] |
