Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed demolition of the existing garages and the construction of two office blocks. The proposed development would include a large basement, which would cover the whole site area. This would undoubtedly result on the removal of any archaeologically relevant layers that may be present, including the gravel itself. Such gravels had the potential to contain evidence of early human occupation and sites dating from this period had been recorded relatively nearby, from Addison Road, north-east of the site. The close proximity of the site to the line of the Roman road also warranted discussion. Evidence of Roman occupation of the area had been recovered from an excavation to the east of the site. While this was the only GLSMR entry for this period within the specified 500m radius of the site, other evidence of Roman occupation of the area had come from both north and east of West Kensington. For the other prehistoric, and the Saxon and medieval periods, there was some evidence of use of the gravel terraces forming the study area but no find spots were located close to the proposal site. Previous land use of the proposal site would have resulted in minimal truncation of archaeological relevant layers to date. There was little evidence that the site had been affected by the construction of the railway or canal, although this could not be ascertained completely from the cartographic evidence. The area of the site at 0.31 ha was not especially large and therefore a statistical argument for the presence of archaeological sites, in which the chances of a site being present on a parcel of land increases proportionally to the size, could not be entertained in this case. However, within an urban context, large development areas were infrequent and a lower threshold for intervention may be justified, especially when, as in this case, the area was the last in its vicinity that could be shown to have been relatively undisturbed. The discussion of the site has led to the conclusion that the archaeological potential could only, at best, be described as moderate. There were some factors that might merit further intervention in the form of a watching brief or field evaluation, whereas others suggested that there was little need for further action. [Au(adp)] |
