Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development found that parts of the site had been designated as Areas of High Archaeological Potential, due to finds of Roman material. Pottery and coins had been recovered at one location, whilst chalk-cut shafts containing a possible Roman cremation and 1st-4th century artefacts had been recorded at another. Remains found in the surrounding area included Mesolithic and Neolithic flints, evidence of an extensive Bronze Age flint industry, a Romano-British occupation site, findspots of Roman artefacts, a Saxon cemetery and medieval pottery. A large number of sites had also been recorded within the historic village of Ewell. The proposal site had been extensively quarried for chalk during the 19th century, so that the likelihood of any archaeological remains surviving was greatly reduced. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during any development works likely to affect undisturbed deposits. [AIP] |
