Abstract: |
The assessment area lay within an area, which was regarded as being of high archaeological potential. The site was not far from the centre of the medieval planned town of Leatherhead. There was no precise evidence as to how far the planned town extended towards the bridge across the Mole, and it was possible that it stopped just short of the site. This was uncertain, though, and, even if correct, medieval expansion into this area was quite likely. The probability of this was demonstrated by the existence of buildings in the general area on the 17th and 18th century maps. The 1782 map revealed, however, that there was then no building on the site. [Au(adp)] |
