Abstract: |
A desk-based study to assess the archaeological potential of land at Chaseside, situated within the historic core of the town of Ware, was undertaken. The site was shown to have a high potential for the survival of archaeological remains, particularly of medieval activity associated with buildings on street frontages and associated back-plots, and possibly also relating to a church predating St Mary's or to the Alien Benedictine Priory established in the locality in the eleventh century. It was also shown that there would be a slight potential for the existence of Iron Age and Saxon remains to survive within the proposal area, based on the results of previous archaeological investigations in Ware. The site was also shown to have formerly been occupied by maltings, as shown on the 1845 Tithe Map. The development of the maltings and other more recent buildings on the site may have caused significant sub-surface disturbance although it was felt that the extent and signficance of this was difficult to map.
