Abstract: |
The area of proposed development lay on the site of the Tynemouth Terminus of the Blyth and Tyne Railway as shown on the OS 1st edition map. It also lay close to the site of Tynemouth Goods and Fish Station, as shown on both 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. A number of railways used these stations - the NER Newcastle, Tynemouth and Newcastle (East) Branch which opened in 1887, the Blyth and Tyne Railway, the NER Tynemouth branch whose line reached Tynemouth in 1847, and the Tynemouth Railway which ran from NER Tynemouth branch to the Tyne Commissioners Cement Works. The earliest feature located with the Study Area was a railway terminal from the Blyth and Tyne Railway but this was abandoned before 1898. No other features appeared in the study area until 1937 when a builders yard was constructed within its borders. These buildings had remained relatively unchanged and were still present on site today. [Au] |
