Abstract: |
In accordance with conditions attached to Scheduled Monument consent, a watching brief was undertaken of six trial pits and a single borehole situated within the north-east corner, immediately adjacent to the ramparts of the Scheduled Ancient Monument Danesfield Camp, a multivallate hillfort. No archaeological features were observed in any of the trial pits nor were any artefacts recovered which pre-dated the nineteenth century. The presence of 20th century rubbish in many of the trial pits indicated that the area had experienced much modern interference which had either destroyed or been dumped upon earlier levels. A brown loam identified in some of the pits represented a post-medieval subsoil which had either been covered or cut by later material. [AIP] |
