Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a 15.5m by 4m trial trench, was undertaken prior to development. The site lay within the historic core of Rayleigh, adjacent to the motte-and-bailey castle and within the assumed course of the outer bailey of the latter. No archaeological features or finds were recorded. All the evidence suggested substantial truncation since the archaeological investigations 30 years previously, perhaps during car park construction.
