Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated to evaluate the condition of archaeological deposits associated with Hadrian's Wall (Scheduled Ancient Monument 28/21) in advance of the proposed capping off to a water main, which lay beneath the southern carriageway of Hexham Road. In the north-eastern corner of Trench 1, a small area of tightly packed sandstones was located which represented an archaeological feature of uncertain date. As they lay on the expected line of Hadrian's Wall they could have been connected with the Wall, or its subsequent robbing. They did not conform to the character of Broad Wall foundations as known in this sector and further investigation would be needed to verify an interpretation. Trench 2 revealed no significant archaeological features. [Au(adp)] |
