Abstract: |
The site lay within an Archaeological Priority Zone, but did not contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings and was not within a Conservation Area. There were, however, numerous entries in the GLSMR within a 250m radius of the site, the majority of which related to the establishment and adaptation of Lambeth Palace and its grounds; the seat of the Archbishop of England from the late 12th century AD. It was clear from historical maps that the site was built upon by the middle of the 18th century, and documentary sources relating to earlier street names in the area inferred that the medieval residence of the Bishops of Rochester and subsequently Carlisle was located within this area. It was this building and associated medieval and early post-medieval activity that possessed the highest degree of archaeological significance for the site. Any potential development would however, need to considered by means of geotechnical survey or evaluation to determine whether prehistoric peat deposits and buried land horizons from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age period existed at depth beneath present ground and basement surfaces. Archaeological excavation to the north of the site within Addingtion Street had revealed such material. [Au(abr)] |
