Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site. Four of the trial trenches, numbered 19-22, were positioned in order to investigate geophysical anomalies identified during a survey. The evaluation revealed a 12th-13th century ditch containing 13th-14th century pottery, a pit containing struck and burnt flints, possiby related to ancient cooking processes, and a gully containing burnt flints, likely to have been of prehistoric date. The gully was located within Trench 22. Unstratified worked flints, including one of Mesolithic date and several ascribed a Late Mesolithic-Neolithic date, were recovered. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during development in the vicinity of Trenches 7-11, where features and artefacts had been recorded, and in the region of Trench 22.
