Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site and its immediate vicinity was undertaken as part of an evaluation prior to the determination of planning permission for the proposed development of the site. The site lay in the centre of the area of the medieval town of Warwick between the Castle and the parish church of St Mary. The town was founded in AD914 and Jury Street itself was a major thoroughfare linking the west and east gates of the town. The study of maps dating from the 17th century had revealed the presence of outbuildings and the layout of the properties across the site and in the vicinity. Excavations in the vicinity had revealed evidence for throughout the medieval period. All the structures within the area were Grade II listed, and were for the most part 18th century in date though number 22 was largely of early 17th century date. Past use of theses was known to have included the presence of a pub called the Black Swan and houses and gardens. In 1851 a Veterinary Infirmary and smithy were present. [Au(adp)] |
