Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the refurbishment of the sewer adjacent to 47 Goodramgate. Goodramgate lay within the Roman Legionary Fortress and ran north from King's Square towards the position of the Porta Decumana before bending towards Monk Bar at the junction of College Street and Bedern. The watching brief was of considerable importance for the history of the Roman Fortress in the post-Roman period and for establishing the origin of a street thought to be of Anglo-Scandinavian origin. Unfortunately, a lack of dating evidence hampered the interpretation of the sequence which relied heavily on comparison with other, dated, sequences in the area. [Au] |
