Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of eight machine dug trenches. The trenches to the north-east contained dumps of coal slack and other evidence of coal working activity, as well as several modern pits. No evidence was found for medieval or pre-industrial remains in this area. The trenches in the southern part of the site showed thick deposits of mining slurry filling a very large pit up to 3m deep in the trial trenches. This was presumed to be the edge of one of the former open cast mining pits. The westernmost trenches contained some slight evidence of the nearby mining activity but nothing more. Trenches nearest to the south-eastern corner found substantial brick and mortar features. [Au(abr)] |
