Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for the construction of a new external drain for the church. The watching brief found that the former medieval tower footings survived adjacent to the east end of the south and north aisles and probably part of the foundations of the west wall of the tower was found in the west baulk section of the drainage gully. The other parts of the tower's footings were not found, these seemed to have been totally destroyed by the 1970 concrete and brick foundations of the vestry. The 1850 Victorian north aisle seemed to have been built on top of the former medieval north aisle footings of the church. Probable medieval grave earth soil was found next to the north and south aisles of the site and the fill contained a few sherds of mid-late 12th to mid 13th century pottery as well as some disarticulated human remains. No evidence was found for the hermit's chapel which was known to have existed in the churchyard. [Au]
