Abstract: |
During the watching brief a major late Saxon boundary ditch, known from earlier investigations, was observed. Documentary evidence showed that the site was occupied from at least the 13th century, and was probably redeveloped shortly before 1381. By the late medieval period it had been divided into 4 properties, whose basements probably removed earlier levels. A stone boundary wall between the two northern walls was observed, and other stone structures were also revealed. Garden deposits, including rubbish pits, were also identified. A post-medieval stone-lined pit was uncovered containing a rich finds assemblage including sherds of Venetian glass. [Au(abr)] |
