Abstract: |
The earliest feature revealed during the watching brief was an 18th century culvert. The Portwell ditch was culverted in the 18th century enabling the land to be made available for extra-mural settlement. Revealed on both plots 4A and 4C were the remains of many pennant sandstone walls. There appeared to be two distinct phases. On plot 4C there was a series of sandstone walls that were all roughly on the same alignment, running parallel with the Portwall. Examination of a map of 1828 suggested that these represented structures that formed part of the extra-mural settlement and that they pre-dated the construction of an 1840s goods shed. The second phase of walls were on a different alignment and probably belonged to the 1840s goods shed. [AIP] |
