Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for sheltered retirement accommodation identified that a number of archaeological findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area. Artefacts found included a Palaeolithic handaxe, a Mesolithic axe, Romano-British occupation material, and medieval and post-medieval pottery. The route of a Roman road passed nearby, and a church with Norman origins lay to the south of the site. It was concluded that the proposal area had a moderate to high archaeological potential. However, it was noted that a certain degree of disturbance had occurred at the site in connection with the construction of school buildings and playground areas, so that archaeological deposits may have been removed. It was recommended that a watching brief should be undertaken after the demolition phase of the development process. [AIP] |
