Abstract: |
The application site had a potential for archaeological remains from the Palaeolithic to the Romano-British period, with cropmarks of a possible prehistoric ring-ditch and medieval ridge and furrow identified within in. Further sites were recorded form the immediate vicinity: a ring-ditch beside the sewage works and an Iron Age and Roman occupation site on the opposite bank of the River Soar. The evidence for the features within the site was ambiguous and required further investigation; geophysical survey and the monitoring of boreholes had not provided proof of remains. Construction of the Grand Union Canal had produced considerable disruption to the previous network of tracks and field pattern on this side of the river. This confused any traces of the medieval and earlier topography recorded on maps of the area, and in the absence of earlier maps the context of the site was difficult to establish. The site lay within a route corridor alongside the River Soar, now used by the canal, railway and A6 Trunk Road, but possibly used earlier by a trackway along the flood plain edge in the position of the modern Flesh Hovel Lane. A fording point may have existed close to the site, linking communities on each bank of the river, and this could have prompted occupation here. [Au(abr)] |
