Abstract: |
A watching brief and small scale salvage excavations during groundworks for the construction of a road improvement scheme identified features adjacent to Penhale Round contemporary with or predating the Iron Age occupation of the site; an oval ritual enclosure defined by a series of shallow segmented ditches and post-holes with a central pit containing a cremation urn of Early Bronze Age date at Highgate close to Little Gaverigan Barrow; a cluster of prehistoric pits close to the ritual enclosure at Highgate; a series of well-sealed peat deposits from which core samples were extracted; an area of medieval ridge and furrow at Mayfield Farm; an area of streamworkings of perhaps medieval date at The Kelliers; and an area of prehistoric settlement at Penhale Moor. Over 140 hedge boundaries cut by the route of the bypass were also examined and recorded. [AIP] |
